For hardiness zones 7 and below, start seeds inside about eight weeks before the last frost date in your area. Wait until two weeks after the last frost before you plant the peppers outside. Plant seeds 1/4" deep and keep the soil moist, in a well-draining soil, throughout germination. A heat mat that keeps the soil temperature at 80 degrees or a little above will enhance both germination time and success. You may plant the seeds directly in the garden if you live in a region that has a long growing season. The plants do not like temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Colder temperatures can reduce the yield of the plant, and will stunt growth.
