Packet seed count information and germination instructions for each variety below:
Bloodflower: 80+ seeds, or 1/2 gram
Sow seeds 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last expected frost, at a depth of 1/16” or a tiny bit deeper" under topsoil, or moist cold stratify (see explanation below). The seeds will need light to germinate, so do not bury too deeply. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when danger of frost has passed.
Butterfly Weed, also known as Orange Milkweed: 75 seeds, or 1/2 gram
In late fall, direct sow just below the surface, or moist cold stratify (see explanation below) for 4-6 weeks before planting in spring.
Common Milkweed: 80 seeds, or 1/2 gram
Sow seeds 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last expected frost, at a depth of 1/16” or a tiny bit deeper" under topsoil, or moist cold stratify (see explanation below). The seeds will need light to germinate, so do not bury too deeply. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when danger of frost has passed.
Pink Swamp, or Rose, Milkweed: 70 seeds, or 1/2 gram
Sow seeds 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last expected frost, at a depth of 1/16” or a tiny bit deeper" under topsoil, or moist cold stratify (see explanation below). The seeds will need light to germinate, so do not bury too deeply. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when danger of frost has passed.
Showy Milkweed: 90 seeds, or 1/2 gram
Sow seeds 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last expected frost, at a depth of 1/16” or a tiny bit deeper" under topsoil, or moist cold stratify (see explanation below). The seeds will need light to germinate, so do not bury too deeply. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when danger of frost has passed.

Growing hint: Pour very hot tap water into a container, soak seeds for 12-14 hours just before moist cold stratifying or planting.
Moist cold stratification explained: This means that the seed, after being harvested, dried, and cleaned needs to have a “chilling” period. Nature’s method is done through the winter weather. To obtain similar results the seed should be mixed with moist sand, sealed in an airtight container, and placed in storage 33-38 degrees Fahrenheit. (A refrigerator works best). The period of chilling varies with the species, but for general gardening purposes, 5 weeks will do for most cultivars.
