It's hard to find an annual with a longer bloom season than Calendula "Pacific Beauty" mix (Calendula officinalis) which blooms in shades of saturated orange and yellow from spring through fall, and sometimes into winter in Mediterranean climates. All calendulas make good cut flowers, but "Pacific Beauty," with it's long, sturdy stems and exceptional vase life is a superior choice for arrangements and bouquets. In U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10, sow the seeds in autumn when temperatures are cool for germination in spring or in midsummer for fall flowers.
Prepare a planting bed in an area with full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. If your soil isn't rich in matter, spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost over the soil. Add 2 teaspoons of 16-16-8 fertilizer per square foot. Work the amendments into the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.
Germination and care: Sow the seeds a few weeks before your last expected frost date. Place the seeds on the soil, spacing them three or four inches apart. Cover the seeds with one-quarter inch of soil. The seeds need complete darkness to germinate.Water often enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy.Thin the seedlings to 8 to 12 inches apart when they are a few inches tall. If the seedlings are far enough apart that their roots don't touch, you can pull them up. Otherwise, clip them off at ground level with a pair of scissors that have been disinfected with rubbing alcohol.
Calendula "Pacific Beauty" mix seeds germinate in 8 to 14 days.
Calendula self-sows readily. If you allow some of the seed heads to mature on the plant, you won't have to plant them again next year.
